Just a Walk Will Do…

People always tell me that the hardest part about beginning an active lifestyle is getting motivated.  I always respond saying that you don’t need to run full-fledged marathon or attend military boot camp on your first day. Take it easy, start slow. Now if you’re the type that likes to get going hard then kudos to you. But if you’re not, you can start off light, I’d say first thing in the morning. Sure you need to get up fifteen minutes earlier but it’s worth it, trust me.

I’ve heard that the best way to lose weight is to workout early in the morning so just wake up, drink some water, throw on some clothes, and enjoy the sunrise. You’ll have more energy throughout the day and your body will begin to feel the benefits of increased activity in your lifestyle.

Just remember, a walk will do when time calls for an overdue workout. Just keep it consistent, do it 3 times per week to start, then increase to five, and eventually, you’ll begin each morning with a brisk jog.

Famous People with Diabetes

I found a pretty cool blog post at tudiabetes.com that discusses Famous People with Diabetes. It starts off with someone writing a short post and listing a couple (Mary Tyler Moore and Bret Michaels) and the community goes on into a great discussion with famous diabetics. I had no idea Luther Vandross and Patty Labelle had diabetes. I was however, aware of Halle Barry. It’s a cool post. Check it out when you have a second.

Diabetic Neuropathy

What exactly is diabetic neuropathy? Neuropathy is the damage done to nerves. Diabetic Neuropathy is simply nerve disease or damage caused by diabetes. High blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels and nerves and thus over time, cause this disease. The higher the blood sugar levels, the greater the risk. Close to half of the diabetic population end up diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy because they simply do not do enough to treat their diabetes problems.

Take control of your blood sugar levels. Take your medications as directed by your doctor. Eat a healthy, and well balanced diabetic diet. Go in for regular check-ups. Consult your physician, then, upon approval, begin an exercise program working out 4 to 5 times a week for 30 to 40 minutes at a time. Taking care of your feet is also an important part of diabetic treatment. Avoid tight fitting shoes that may cut off circulation. Many diabetic patients find that walking regularly, taking warm baths, and using elastic stockings or diabetic socks help to relieve foot pain. So start now, take care of yourself and your blood sugar levels.

A word of caution when buying diabetic shoes

People who buy shoes for diabetes often experience loss of feeling in their feet. The result is often a shoe that fits too tight for the foot. A doctor can help you find the right pair to relieve pain. Even if you aren’t feeling pain in your foot now, the right pair of shoes can prevent problems in the future. Proper diabetic shoes should reduce pressure on your feet, relieve your foot from shock and tear during use, and limit the motion of your joints while walking. Limiting the motion of some joints make your foot more stable and functional while reducing any chance of swelling. Consult with your doctor if you haven’t already about the perfect shoes for you to ensure a comfortable and painless future!
