Have a Safe and Happy Memorial Day Weekend

The Memorial Day weekend is in full force right now, with plenty of things going on. While you’re traveling and enjoying the good company of family and friends, it’s important to stay safe during all of the festivities. Whether you’re grilling or enjoying a meal out, remember to make smart decisions for your health.

We talk a lot about doing the right thing to improve your health on this blog. But that’s not what this post is about. This post is about remembering what Memorial Day is all about. Sure, it’s the unofficial start to summer and all of the weekend events include parties and gatherings, but let’s remember what the weekend is all about; honoring those who have served this great country of ours. This day represents a day of remembrance for those men and women who have died in service of the United States of America. This Forbes article sums it up best and talks about what we can do to show our respect:

“Beyond that one moment at 3pm, how can we honor the true significance of Memorial Day? The Memorial Day Foundation, an organization formed to increase awareness and respect for Memorial Day, recommends a few gestures of respect:

Wear a Memorial Day Button from the first of May until Memorial Day.
Visit cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.
Fly the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon. Memorial Day is a day of “National Mourning.”
Attend religious services of your choice.
Visit memorials.
Renew a pledge to aid the widows, and orphans of our fallen dead, and to aid the disabled veterans.

It’s also important that we impart the true meaning of this holiday to our children, so that they grow up understanding that Memorial Day is not about our own pleasure but about honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

So from all of us here at the Diabetic Shoes HuB, thank you to the men, women, and their families for their sacrifice.

Spring is Around The Corner

Who’s enjoying the warmer weather? Okay, so it may not seem warm for all of us, especially those still in parts of the North East, or even Midwest, but we have to be fair and notice that the temperatures have risen a bit in the past few weeks. It’s getting to be the time when baseball is in full swing for all home teams, not just Florida and Arizona, the Spring Training destinations. Walks with dogs will be longer, jogs will be more enjoyable, and flowers and trees will be in bloom. Spring is the perfect time to lengthen your walk outdoors. A simple 15-20 minute stroll after dinner will do great things for your heart, and for your health. If you can’t do it yet because it is still a bit nippy, get your walking shoes ready, because the Spring season is just around the corner. In the meantime, make sure you’re making the right decisions with eating, and do your past to stay active indoors with simple squats and stretching.

Make a Commitment to Health

We’re a few short days away from 2015, and I’m sure that many of you have your New Year’s Resolution ready to go. It’s a big commitment, and undoubtedly takes discipline to stick to. If we can make stronger movements to improve our health, than living longer, healthier, and happier is the ultimate motivation. It’s very tough to go cold turkey, so cheat days are important. Whether you need a rest day if you’re committing to more exercise, or a splurge meal on a healthier diet, you need to keep yourself sane, and happy. So this is it, let’s close out 2014 with a bang, and make 2015 our healthiest year yet!
